It details the history of Brown and its many accomplishments, spotlighting different people and aspects of the university. From the brochure, two specific pages are imaged (not including the cover), a map of the campus at the time and a page about future building projects the university will undertake. This brochure is dated 1964, around this time was the height of displacement of Fox Point from their homes by Brown, through purchase of property in the area, off campus housing, and the gentrification both bring. None of this is mentioned in the brochure. Brown is celebrating its exploits, while the community suffers at its hands. This represents the single-minded view the archive illustrates of this time and area. This demonstrates how the Pembroke Archive makes space for conversations the university has traditionally avoided and highlights community voices previously ignored. In this instance the Pembroke Archive illustrates a medium between the community and institutional archive, where in, the modern university is able to look back on its history with a more critical lenses and make archival space for those forced out by it. This collection was put together by Fox Point resident, Lou Costa, with the help of many, including a Brown Professor, however this project has no affiliation with the university. Lou Costa wished to document Fox Point and the communities of people who lived and worked there. Eventually the collection was gifted to the PPL by Costa. The Fox Point community experienced a lot of turmoil at the hands of Brown University and the Urban Renewal Project, forcing many to leave, and irreparably changing the demographics of the area. The Costa Collection seeks to shine a light on this history and highlight the vibrant communities that have been overshadowed. Title A name given to the resource African Americans on College Hill, 1950-1979 : is a special project of The Urban League of Rhode Island Subject The topic of the resource College Hill; Black experience; Racism; Community Description An account of the resource This is an oral history, in the format of a book, housed in the Rhode Island Collection of the Providence Public Library (PPL). It consists of recollections of 17 African-Americans who lived in College Hill neighborhood of Providence between 1950 and 1979. It discusses various aspects of the community at the time, from the doctor that help deliver most of the participant to the racism they faced on College Hill. The participants speak about the different ways in which they were pushed out of the neighborhood. People constantly harassing them about selling their home, the Providence Preservation Society withheld funding for renovations, and displacement from the Urban Renewal Project. Over the course of one participants life, the make up of College Hill completely changed because all her friends and family were forced to move. This tells the story of residents on College Hill, emphasizing the struggles they faced as a result of racism and redevelopment in the area. Unlike the Brown institutional archive, the PPL highlights the voices of community members and works to convey their perspective.
